U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.) participated in the christening ceremony of the State of Maine Vessel at Hanwha Shipyard in Philadelphia, joining U.S. and international leaders for the event.
Senator Young is a leading Republican advocate for the Shipbuilding and Harbor Infrastructure for Prosperity and Security (SHIPS) for America Act, which aims to strengthen U.S. shipbuilding and commercial maritime sectors. The legislation was first introduced by Senators Young and Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) in December 2024.
According to Senator Young, "The urgency to boost American shipbuilding has emerged as a priority of bipartisan consensus this year, particularly after the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative revealed the findings of its investigation into China’s shipbuilding dominance and President Trump’s signing of a shipbuilding executive order."
The recent report from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative highlighted concerns about China's role in global shipbuilding, which has contributed to increased focus on revitalizing domestic industries through legislative measures such as the SHIPS for America Act.
