Senator Todd Young, U.S. Senator from Indiana, has recently addressed issues related to the South China Sea and youth engagement with America’s service academies in a series of posts on his Twitter account.
On August 13, 2025, Senator Young criticized China’s actions in the South China Sea, stating, "The Chinese Communist Party continues to deny Filipino fishermen access to fishing grounds just off their own coast, which is hundreds of miles from China. It is time for China to obey the law and stop this recklessness."
Two days later, on August 15, he announced an opportunity for students: "Are you a high school student interested in learning more about America’s service academies? You are invited to my Academy Day this Monday, August 18. For more information or to RSVP, email academy_nominations@young.senate.gov https://t.co/F0oincrGcf"
Later that same day, Senator Young returned to the topic of regional security by posting: "Security cooperation with the Philippines is increasingly important as China’s aggression in the South China Sea intensifies."
Tensions over fishing rights and territorial claims have persisted between China and its neighbors in Southeast Asia. The South China Sea remains a region of significant geopolitical friction due to overlapping maritime claims by several countries including the Philippines. The United States has consistently supported freedom of navigation and expressed concern over China's actions in these disputed waters.
Senator Young's outreach regarding Academy Day reflects ongoing efforts by members of Congress to engage young constituents with military education opportunities.
