Today, U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.), who chairs the Subcommittee on Surface Transportation, Freight, Pipelines, and Safety, led a hearing titled "Shifting Gears: Issues Impacting the Trucking and Commercial Bus Industries in the U.S." The session focused on various challenges faced by the trucking and motorcoach industries, emphasizing safety enhancements, regulatory burden reduction, and long-term sustainability.
The discussion explored potential reforms in regulations and policies related to these sectors. Key topics included Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) regulations, technology deployment, freight theft and fraud issues, workforce challenges, as well as enforcement and compliance requirements. These discussions are pertinent to the upcoming surface transportation reauthorization.
Senator Young highlighted his interest in identifying outdated or unnecessary federal regulations that may not contribute to road safety. He expressed concern about the financial impact of such rules on private-sector innovators aiming to improve safety and efficiency within the transportation industry.
Young stressed the importance of enhancing roadway infrastructure for safer commercial trucking and bus operations. He advocated for maintaining road quality and using federal funding effectively alongside state, local, and private investments to enhance roadway safety.
“Indiana is home to over 97,000 miles of public roadways and, as the Crossroads of America," said Senator Young. "Hoosiers rely heavily on our transportation infrastructure.” He mentioned his efforts in securing federal funding for projects like the I-69 Ohio River Crossing between Indiana and Kentucky over the Ohio River—a project aimed at reducing traffic congestion while improving overall roadway safety.
