Legislation introduced by Representative Victoria Spartz to rename the Elwood, Indiana, U.S. Post Office building after fallen police officer Noah Jacob Shahnavaz has been enacted into law by President Biden.

Rep. Spartz expressed gratitude for the support of her colleagues in honoring Officer Shahnavaz's heroism. "The renaming of the Elwood Post Office will serve as a reminder of Noah's ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms for generations to come," she stated.

Officer Noah Jacob Shahnavaz was a dedicated member of the Elwood Police Department in Indiana, known for his commitment to public service and community protection. Born in Indianapolis in 1998, he demonstrated leadership and a passion for service from an early age. After graduating from Fishers High School in 2016, he joined the U.S. Army and served as a Sergeant with the 591st Military Police Company. He deployed to the Middle East during the Global War on Terror, earning respect from fellow soldiers who described him as "everything you’d want in a police officer; every attribute, every characteristic."

After his military service, Shahnavaz joined the Elwood Police Department in 2021 and quickly gained admiration for his calm demeanor and strong work ethic.

On July 31, 2022, Officer Shahnavaz was tragically killed during a routine traffic stop when he was ambushed and fatally shot by a repeat offender previously convicted of shooting at police officers in Indianapolis.

Throughout his career, Officer Shahnavaz exemplified service, sacrifice, and honor. His dedication was evident both in defense of his country and as a protector of his local community. He is remembered for his bravery and integrity.
