Deb Wappel is running for the Republican nomination to serve on the Starke County Board of Commissioners representing District 3. The primary will be held on May 7.

In a post on her campaign's Facebook page, Wappel noted that Starke County is set to take in more tax revenue than ever. "As commissioner, I plan to prioritize the essential services," she said. "Those essential services that serve to help save our lives, homes, and health. Also our hard working employees need to earn a living wage. And of course everyone would like to have quality safe roads. The other fancy and fun is great as add-ons after we feel protected, safe, and cared for."

According to her LinkedIn page, Wappel is a certified speaker, trainer, and coach at Maxwell Leadership as well as the owner of EncourageMint Leadership. She also co-owns Wappel Grain & Herb, a farm in San Pierre specializing in mint crops, with her husband Larry. She's a former elementary school teacher, assistant principal, and principal.

Wappel also spent six years as the executive director of Love in the Name of Christ of Brevard, specializing in fundraising, communications, and team building.

In a press release, RED PAC Chief Strategist Charlie Kolean endorsed Wappel, saying she was a candidate that shared "our values of supporting private property rights, championing fiscal responsibility, and tirelessly working towards enhancing government transparency." Kolean said that Wappel "[reflects] the conservative ideals that guide our efforts in rural economic development.”

According to the Indiana County Commissioners, the county board of commissioners acts as the executive body of the county and shares legislative duties with the county council. The board of commissioners has the authority to pass ordinances in a number of broad areas, including supervising road and bridge construction and maintenance, developing programs to cultivate economic progress, auditing and authorizing disbursements for the county, and appointing members to serve on various boards, commissions, and committees. The commission is made up of three members, each representing one district, who are elected to four-year terms.
