U.S. Senators Todd Young of Indiana and Tina Smith of Minnesota have reintroduced a bill focused on improving soil research and supporting long-term agricultural productivity in Indiana, the Midwest, and across the United States. The legislation aims to provide farmers with improved technology for monitoring soil conditions, allowing them to make informed decisions that can increase yields, conserve resources, and maintain farmland for future generations.

Senator Young stated, “Hoosier farmers and producers feed our communities, drive our economy, and play a critical role in our supply chains. This legislation will equip and empower our agriculture sector to choose the best practices for their individual operations.”

Senator Smith added, “Farmers in Minnesota understand the importance of having reliably healthy, productive soil. This bipartisan legislation would help farmers by supporting a long-term research effort that deepens our understanding of soil carbon storage potential in agricultural land. These tools can help make our farms more resilient and give farmers access to realistic, impactful strategies for their operations. It’s a win for farmers today and the farmers of future generations.”

The Advancing Research on Agricultural Soil Health Act proposes targeted investments in technologies designed to accurately measure and monitor soil quality. With better data available, farmers and ranchers could adopt voluntary practices proven to preserve soil health while maintaining strong productivity levels.
