University Celebrates The Life Of Hank The Trailblazer

Hank the Trailblazer’s person, Lade Akande, shared the following message with the University community.

On Wednesday, February 15, 2023, Hank peacefully crossed the rainbow bridge surrounded by family and friends. He was 14.5 years old.

It was a warm, sunny day, and Hank enjoyed one last walk through the woods (in his stroller, of course) and popped into some of his favorite neighborhood spots for some extra scratches and kisses. He had steak for breakfast and a Chick-fil-A sandwich for lunch as well as lots of kisses and snuggles before I wrapped him in his favorite sling and stared lovingly into his eyes as he peacefully transitioned at home.

On Valentine’s Day, the UHS community came together and celebrated Hank one last time in style, complete with custom merch, tasty treats, and some special guest appearances, including from his buddy, Butler Blue IV.

Losing a loved one is never easy, but the community made sure Hank and I were showered in love and gave us the strength we needed to make this difficult choice.

As they say: Legends never die. Hank’s life and legacy are just that: legendary. Hank was my baby and my anchor for 14 years, and half of his life he spent serving proudly as the unofficial mascot for UHS. We are truly grateful.

I am so moved by the support of the community and proud of the way our students handled this difficult part of life. Hank lives forever in my heart and the hearts and minds of so many. Thank you for your loving him.
