Senator Todd Young, a U.S. Senator from Indiana, has recently addressed the state of American shipbuilding and other topics through a series of posts on his official Twitter account.

On October 13, 2025, Young reflected on the history of U.S. shipyards and called for legislative action to revive the industry. He wrote, “American shipyards employed more than a million people during World War II, but in the decades that followed, U.S. shipbuilding slowed to a trickle.” The President’s executive order was a good start to bring back shipbuilding. Congress needs to pass the SHIPS Act to lock it in.

The following day, Young commented on local sports, posting on October 14, 2025: Great season of football in the Hoosier state.

Later on October 14, Young returned to the topic of maritime policy, stating, China is aggressively undermining efforts to restore American shipbuilding. Congress needs to pass the SHIPS Act to show that we are serious about reviving America’s maritime industry.

The SHIPS Act referenced by Young is proposed legislation aimed at revitalizing the U.S. shipbuilding sector by setting minimum requirements for U.S.-built ships in federal service. This effort comes in response to concerns over increased competition from foreign shipbuilders and the decline in domestic shipyard employment since World War II.

Young’s comments reflect ongoing discussions in Congress about how best to address strategic vulnerabilities in American manufacturing and infrastructure, particularly in industries viewed as vital for national security.
