Senator Todd Young, a U.S. Senator representing Indiana, has outlined his legislative priorities on social media regarding the United States' approach to critical minerals and its relationship with China.
On October 10, 2025, Young posted, "I’ve laid out the start of an aggressive strategy, including my STRATEGIC Minerals Act, to encourage the Administration to collaborate with other countries and reduce America’s exposure to China." The senator emphasized the need for a coordinated effort with international partners to lessen U.S. dependence on Chinese mineral supply chains.
In another post on the same day, Young warned about China's approach to global resource control: "Militarizing these resources is part of Beijing’s policy playbook. The U.S. needs a decisive critical minerals plan now—mine, refine, recycle at home, ally-shore production, fast-track permits, and deploy international levers to secure capacity to drive out CCP influence."
On October 11, 2025, Young also addressed his constituents directly in a brief message: "Hoosiers!"
The issue of critical minerals has gained prominence as the United States seeks to secure supply chains for materials essential to technology and defense industries. Lawmakers have raised concerns that China controls significant portions of global mining and refining capacity for key minerals used in electronics and renewable energy technologies. In response, Congress has considered various legislative measures aimed at boosting domestic production and reducing reliance on foreign sources.
Young's reference to his "STRATEGIC Minerals Act" aligns with broader efforts in Washington focused on encouraging domestic mining operations and forming alliances with like-minded countries to diversify supply chains.
