U.S. Senator Todd Young, along with U.S. Representative Rudy Yakym and other members of the Indiana congressional delegation, have sent a letter to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Mehmet Oz. The lawmakers are urging HHS to allocate the highest possible funding from the new Rural Health Transformation Program to Indiana.
Congress has recently set aside $50 billion aimed at improving healthcare in rural areas across the country. The letter from Indiana's delegation stresses that this funding is crucial for supporting rural hospitals, community health centers, and healthcare providers serving more than 1.49 million residents in rural parts of Indiana.
"Indiana is home to 42 rural counties, and our rural communities play a vital role in feeding the nation and supporting our economy," the members wrote. "Yet, they face some of the most significant healthcare challenges in the country. Allocating the highest possible funding to Indiana will help us protect access to care, keep hospital doors open, and ensure healthier futures for Hoosiers."
The correspondence details ongoing difficulties faced by rural healthcare facilities in Indiana over recent decades, such as shortages of resources and barriers to access that could impact long-term health outcomes for people living in these areas.
"Indiana’s rural healthcare providers work tirelessly with limited resources to serve their communities," according to the letter. "Federal investment is essential to strengthening these systems, expanding preventative care, and ensuring every Hoosier has access to the services they need."
The lawmakers conclude by stating their commitment to collaborating with federal officials so that Indiana receives maximum support through this program.
Senator Young and Representative Yakym were joined by Senator Jim Banks as well as Representatives Frank Mrvan, Marlin Stutzman, Victoria Spartz, Jefferson Shreve, Andre Carson, Mark Messmer, and Erin Houchin in sending this request.
