U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.) spoke on the Senate floor to oppose a resolution from Senate Democrats that aimed to reinstate previous limits on Indiana’s power plants. According to Young, this measure would have led to higher energy costs for residents of Indiana.
The resolution in question, S.J. Res. 60, was introduced under the Congressional Review Act in June and brought up for a vote in the Senate following Young’s remarks. The Senate rejected the resolution by a vote of 47-51.
“Rather than working to keep energy generation steady and reliability predictable, my colleagues on the other side of the aisle attempted to advance a repeal that would have punished Indiana at the worst possible time,” said Senator Young. “Hoosiers should not pay more because government insists on regulating yesterday’s grid instead of today’s realities.”
Clint Woods, Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), also commented on the outcome: “Thank you to Senator Young and our delegation for leading the effort to defeat this misguided effort. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management strongly supports the underlying effort to clean up outdated standards following a 2024 U.S. Supreme Court decision,” said Woods. “The resolution considered yesterday would have done nothing to improve the environment but could have needlessly cost Hoosier ratepayers. The Braun administration and IDEM are committed to energy affordability and reliably, while continuing robust environmental protection.”
