CARMEL, IN – The City of Carmel is joining with communities across the country to celebrate the Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month during the month of May. Mayor Jim Brainard has issued an official proclamation that is included with this media release.
Carmel is a growing, diverse community that welcomes and embraces residents from across the globe who have moved here because we have achieved a reputation of being a diverse and welcoming City for all, regardless of race, religion and cultural ethnicity.
It is estimated that roughly 20 percent of the residential households in Carmel are occupied by families who do not consider English their first language. U.S. Census Bureau statistics also bear witness that a growing percentage of Carmel residents come here from the global locations celebrated during this month of May.
"We take pride in knowing that Carmel continues to become an international City in many ways. One must simply walk down Main Street or the Monon Greenway and Midtown Plaza to see that Carmel has become a very diverse City," said Mayor Brainard. "It is important that we continue to take every opportunity to officially recognize special observances like this so that future residents will feel the same comfort level that our current citizens enjoy."
