Wabash Opens Lacrosse Season With Home Win Over Anderson

The Wabash College lacrosse team surrendered an early goal to Anderson University before scoring nine straight goals in a 16-9 victory in the 2023 season opener Wednesday afternoon at Fischer Field.

 

Wabash (1-0) fired 53 shots in the contest, the second-highest total in program history. The Little Giants put 30 shots on goal for the evening.

 

Josh Taylor started the scoring for Wabash after Anderson (0-1) scored a man-up goal four minutes into the contest. The sophomore scored his first goal of the season, one of three for the game, to even the score at 1-1. Freshman Quinn Fitzgerald notched his first collegiate goal two minutes later to put the Little Giants in front 2-1.

 

Fitzgerald picked up his first assist on the next Wabash goal. The freshman found fellow first-year player Jake Pippen, who scored his first collegiate goal, to push the lead to 3-1. The Little Giants got an unassisted goal from Ethan Stonis for one of his three goals in the game ahead of a second goal by Fitzgerald to take a 5-1 lead after the first period.

 

Stonis scored his second goal of the game to open the second period. Wabash scored four more times before the Ravens found the back of the net midway through the second period to end the Little Giants' run. Neither team scored in the remaining minutes to give Wabash a 10-2 lead at halftime.

 

Artie Rogers scored a goal for the Little Giants in the first 38 seconds of the third period. Taylor, Fitzgerald, and Pippen added goals for Wabash for a 15-7 advantage heading into the final period. Stonis provided the final Little Giant score as a Wabash penalty expired for a man-down goal midway through the period. Anderson added the last two goals of the contest for the 16-9 final.

 

Fitzgerald led the Little Giants with four goals. Taylor, Pippen, and Stonis each scored three times. Sam Santiago, Rogers, and Evan Stonis scored a goal for Wabash in the win. Rogers added a game-high three assists. Fitzgerald, Santiago, Evan Stonis, and Conner Cochran each had assists.

 

Wabash put up 53 total shot attempts in the game, the second most ever by a Little Giant team. Wabash put up 30 shots on goal, led by Santiago with eight. Freshman Braeden Cooper faced 35 total shot attempts by Anderson, with 21 shots on goal. He finished the game with 12 saves to earn his first collegiate victory as a goalkeeper.

 

Wabash dominated the dot, winning 25 of 29 faceoffs. Luka DiFilippo won all 25 faceoffs and grabbed a Wabash single-game record 18 ground balls. Rogers scooped up seven ground balls, and Ethan Stonis finished with five ground balls.

 

The Wabash defense caused 13 turnovers in the game. Ethan Stonis was credited with three caused turnovers. Rogers and Lucas Cunningham each finished with two caused turnovers. The Little Giants were 0-1 on man-up opportunities but held Anderson to 1-of-8 on extra-man chances. Wabash scored the only short-handed goal of the game.

 

Wabash returns to action on Tuesday, February 21, with a road contest at Monmouth College in Illinois at 6 p.m. CT.
