In a recent op-ed published by the Washington Examiner, U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.) discussed the need for an aggressive strategy to secure critical minerals in America. This comes after China restricted exports of essential rare earth elements and magnets used in military and technological applications.

Senator Young highlighted the dependency on China, which controls 85% of global processing capacity for these materials and 99% of heavy rare earth elements processing. He emphasized that this dependency threatens both America’s economic well-being and military readiness.

A temporary deal between the United States and China allows some exports to resume but excludes those with direct military applications. Young argues that relying on China is short-sighted, urging Congress to adopt a multi-pronged strategy to secure supply chains and reduce dependencies.

Young’s proposed legislation includes the Finding ORE Act, which aims to map critical minerals in friendly countries, and the Critical Minerals Security Act, which would provide strategic intelligence. Additionally, his STRATEGIC Minerals Act would enable focused trade agreements with reliable partners.

The senator calls for rebuilding domestic mining capabilities while working with allies to streamline permitting processes. He stresses that temporary solutions are insufficient and urges Congress to act decisively.

“China isn’t pausing to weigh its next moves, and neither should we,” Young stated, emphasizing the urgency of securing America’s future in critical minerals.
